Technical Enablement: Sales Engineering with YOU in Mind

When I first joined the Redox team, I had no idea what my role was supposed to be. Our CTO dubbed me the “Tech Enablement Princess” and I rolled with it.

I came in knowing what my strengths are: I am personable, I love forming connections with people, and have a technical background in the EHR space after providing technical support and consulting services to a number of health systems for over five years. But it was up to me to figure out how those qualities fit into what we at Redox call “Technical Enablement”, and more importantly, how that role involves all of you.

After absorbing different expectations from the team about what Technical Enablement means to them, it became clear the position is based on what’s traditionally called a Sales Engineer. The Bureau of Labor Statistics defines Sales Engineers as those who “sell complex scientific and technological products or services to businesses. They must have extensive knowledge of the products’ parts and functions and must understand the scientific processes that make these products work.”

A lot of the work I do fits this definition—I’m a technical resource for our Business Development team who pull me into scoping conversations with our prospective customers to answer deeper technical questions about how Redox works and what connecting to us entails. The goal of providing a technical resource throughout this process is to help you stay informed and engaged prior to a project kickoff by connecting with you directly and answering any questions you have about Redox and EHR architecture as well as the development involved in an implementation.

There’s another piece of my job, however, that I feel strongly about which isn’t covered in the traditional role of a Sales Engineer: I want to be your advocate. I want to understand how Redox can make your job as a developer easier. I am the ligament connecting you with our Product Team so they have a consistent stream of conversations and feedback so our product roadmap aligns with your wants and needs. I’m also hoping to help you connect with each other (see my first post on this blog here about our community created tools!) and build a Redox engineering community.

So, I’ve mixed this developer evangelism into my definition of Technical Enablement and am writing about it here so you know I am your resource. If you want to connect or have any questions or feedback, you can Slack me at liza_redox or e-mail me at [email protected] and I will be happy to chat! Nice to e-meet you all.
